TY 2015-16's International Flavour
This year we have a number of international students participating in the TY programme. Here are their first impressions -
When I first arrived I saw that the weather is really different compared with the Spanish weather, here all the days are very cold and rains a lot, not like in Spain. In the Spanish city where I live (Marbella, Malaga) the weather is incredible - all the days are sunny and the lowest temperature in winter can be about fifteen degrees and it rains once in three months.
The city is really small but very beautiful especially where I live near the forest, where I and the boys of the family get long walks.
The Irish family are really nice and I enjoy life with all of them, especially but more with the big and small brothers of the family. They look after me very well and all of them are very nice, I feel very comfortable with this “new family”.
The CBC school is very nice and big. It has lots of classes and sport pitches. I can say that it is better than my Spanish school. It was very easy to get lost the first day because there are lots of classes. The best thing about the school is all the kind of activities that we can do like social placement, the work experience, etc.
There are a lots of differences between Irish TY and 4th Year in my school in South Korea. First of all, time is different. Irish TY usually start school at 8:45 morning, and finish at 4:00 PM.
But in my old school 4th years start at 8:00 AM, and finish at 9:00 PM. In my high school ordinary classes happen between 8:00 and 4:00. There are extra classes between and 4:00~6:00, And at night time, we have studying time. Some students even are go to extra classes after they finish school.
A little bit Paler
There are several differences you notice the moment you get off the plane. You meet your family - a very pale family, not like our brown parents and brothers! You get in the car and the steering wheel is on the opposite side, then you drive on the wrong side of the road!! You arrive at your new and odd typical Irish family house that for the next 9 months you will call home.
The first day of school you have to get used to wearing a uniform, something not very common in Spain. Then you are the new guy and you realize that in Spain you are the strange and exotic guy with blond hair and blue eyes but in Ireland you could be one of them - if you were only a little bit paler. But also you are the silly new guy who is always in the wrong class and doesn't notice anything.

Brains of Dun Laoghaire competition 'suits' our TY students!
The annual Transition Year quiz, otherwise known as the Cathaoirleach Quiz, was held at County Hall on March 25th, 2015. 22 teams representing 12 DLR secondary schools competed for the ‘Brains of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown’ title and trophy.
An Cathaoirleach Cllr. Marie Baker acted as quizmaster for the event, which included rounds on local history, art and politics, sport, biodiversity, music and general knowledge. Cllr. Baker awarded a special spot prize of Easter eggs to the team with the most humorous incorrect answer. This prize went to one of the teams from Mount Anville Secondary School for their brutal honesty when not knowing a particular answer.
Another highlight was the boys from CBC Monkstown who despite only having 4 members on each team (instead of the usual 5), more than made up for the lack of numbers by oozing style, with each member wearing suits, bow ties and shades.

GAA Coaching
This year's transition year students have had an opportunity to train in GAA coaching. Having been training every Thursday since September the lads tried out their skills, coaching some of our first year students - you can see them in action in the slide show below. They have now received their coaching certificates and will be able to put their new skills to good use!
The 7 habits of Highly Effective Teens
Several TY students are taking part in the '7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens' programme organised by St Anne's Parish in Shankhill. Working with students from other schools, they will be getting expert training in the skills necessary for life in the 21st century. Full details are on the calendar.
Have You Got Talent?
If you've an interest in Medicine, Psychology, Science, Legal Studies or Creative Writing and would like to develop your skills in these areas check out the Centre for Talented Youth. Run in the Dark - with the Mark Pollock Trust
One of the most memorable events from last year was when Mark Pollock visited the school and spoke to the TY students. His story was both inspiring and motivating. After his talk a huge number of TY students volunteered to take part in the Run in the Dark. Mr Ferguson has invited Mark back to the school and we are looking forward to welcoming him on Tuesday October 22nd, it promises to be a great afternoon!
As we move onwards and upwards, many of this year's TY students are already in training joining with Mr Ferguson in the 'run a marathon in a month' challenge. If you would like to face new challenges see Mr Ferguson to sign up for the Fun Run on the 13th of November. The race starts at 7.30 p.m. Parents are welcome too. Run a Marathon in a Month!
The Challenge
We’re going to challenge everyone to run at school every day at lunchtime for the month of October. By doing so, you’ll have run your first marathon within a few weeks. That’s over 26 miles or 42 kilometres!
The highlights of this Challenge will be the 5K Fancy Dress Fun Run on October 12th (in aid of the Simon Community) and the Run in the Dark 5K or 10K road run on November 13th (in aid of the Mark Pollock Trust and other charities). This should be something you can push yourself to do.
We want to see dozens of you coming into school every day with running gear. If you missed out on the opportunity of the September Challenge this will be the perfect chance for you to get involved, to show that you’re keen to try new things and step out of your comfort zone.
Dates.
The challenge starts on Thursday 3rd October (so you can still cycle to school!) and the last day will be Wednesday 13thNovember with a CBC Transition Year Team taking part in The Run in the Dark that evening. That’s 20 days of running - the more you can do, the better. The changing rooms will be open every lunch time so there’s no problem getting a shower before the afternoon classes if you’re sweating or if you get wet in the rain.
