On the 11th of September I had my first ever day of social placement. I am doing my social placement as a GAA coach with Cuala in Harold Boys' primary school. This was interesting for me as I have never played gaelic football in my life. I got the Dart in an hour early assuming I would get lost as I only had a hand drawn map as my aid to finding the school, to my surprise I found the school in minutes.Although I did manage to cause some confusion - I introduced myself to the principal as doing social placement with CBC, she told me that they weren't expecting me and that she had received none of my paper work. I feared I was at the wrong Harold Boys' school, in the end it was just my bad luck for introducing myself as being with the school, instead of explaining that I was working with Cuala. I guess it's the little things like this that make a difference.
I started at quarter past nine, I met the principal (properly this time) and the coaches I was going to be working with. Then we headed out to the pitch.
After a few minutes the sixth class students were marched out and left with us by their teacher for a half hour. We did a warm up (British bulldogs) and then moved on to learning a skill which I also had to learn. The children were well behaved and made my job quite easy, they also seemed to really enjoy the sport. We repeated this with fifth, fourth and third class! After my first day I felt good that I made it to the school and did the social placement independently.
