My social placement is Meals on Wheels Dalkey and I do it along with Eoin, one of the other lads from TY. Meals on Wheels is a voluntary organisation that provide really cheap food to people who can’t make their own food easily (usually elderly people).
Every Tuesday morning I cycle to Dalkey with Eoin and at 9 am we begin working with the voluntary
staff at Meals on Wheels. We help out as much as we can, whether it be by peeling potatoes or cleaning dishes. We help with lifting and moving the food and we prepare it and put the food into each tray, being careful to ration it out correctly and make sure everybody gets a fair share of food. Then we close the trays with lids.
We also help with cleaning up. I wash the dishes and clean everything while Eoin dries each item and puts it away. We also do the desserts; we prepare each dessert and add sauce or chocolate flakes to the desserts. Sometimes we will go down to the local shops (butchers) to pick up food or spices to be used in the trays. We are given a small break at 10:20 and we are given food or tea / coffee and are allowed
to leave for a few minutes.
When we are done filling the trays we put the lids on them and stack them in piles of 4 for the delivery team. There are usually 60-70 trays each week. The people who volunteer there are very nice and helpful.

Last week I was given Meals on Wheels Dalkey as my social placement for TransitionYear along with my friend Ross. I was happy with the placement that I was assigned to as my friend was there already and he said that he had a great time.
So on the 20th of January 2014 I went to Meals on Wheels Dalkey with my classmate Ross at nine and we were greeted by the workers in the
kitchen there and introduced to the whole team of volunteers.
Everyone was very nice and friendly to us. We
were shown around the kitchen and where everything was and we were shown what jobs we had to do.
The aim of Meals on Wheels is to prepare dinner for older people who may not be able to do it for themselves, then the food is delivered to them by car.
Ross and I were given the chance to work in the kitchen along side the volunteers. We were both very impressed by the fact that the women prepare these dinners for free and that they do it in their own free time.
We were then given the task of going to the butchers to purchase chicken fillets. Then we were asked to help lay out the dishes in which the food was to be placed and to help with loading food in and out of the oven and wheeling it around on trolleys to be put out. Finally they asked us to clean the dishes.
Overall we were very happy to help as everyone was really helpful and nice. I look forward to going there every Tuesday as it is fun and enjoyable.
