On Friday last my class (4JHa) and I had an anti-bullying workshop. A lady called Patricia was here representing Sticks and Stones. She asked if we had witnessed any bullying in our year and school but none of us had. She mentioned a few scenarios of bullying in her old school and in other schools.
We were all seated in a circle so that she could see all of our faces. With the person sitting on your left you would talk to them trying to learn something new about the person. Then afterwards you would have to read out something new that you learnt about the person to your left.
She got us to explain the seven types of bullying. There was verbal (teasing, jeering, name calling, slagging, mimicking), physical (fighting, punching, spitting, pushing, tripping). There was cyber (using technology like phones and computers), gesture (threatening signs, dirty looks), exclusion (leaving someone out) and extortion (threatening, blackmailing).
After getting to know all our names Patricia started elaborating on what sticks and stones actually do. They get to go to schools and talk about bullying and how that affects the bully and also the person who is targeted. She also told us stories of the different types of bullying situations in her old school and also in some of the schools that she travelled to. She wanted to make sure we knew what behaviour is bullying behaviour. We looked at the idea of the people who are part of the audience or part of the back up.
Patricia wanted the class to do some role plays on any type of bully situation we wanted. The class were split into 3 groups. We could to choose to make the bullying verbal, gesture or exclusion. This workshop helped me to understand the different bully types, and how people will feel in a bullying situation. To check out the Sticks and Stones Facebook page click here.
