On Wednesday 24 September two Simon Community Dublin volunteers came into CBC to talk to the transition years about homelessness in Ireland today and also about the work done by the Simon Community. Established in 1969 by a group of students in Trinity College, The Simon Community aims to provide an outlet for those who are homeless all across Ireland. We were all very impressed by the amount of services provided by the community, such as soup runs, activities and housing. We also learned about homelessness in general, like how it can be caused and ways of preventing it. Finally we were informed of a fun run in aid of The Simon Community and almost the whole year were eager to get involved. Everyone gained a valuable insight into the topic and it was a great experience for all!
For those who don’t know, The Simon Community is an organisation that helps get rid of homelessness in Dublin by providing a place for homeless to get food and shelter. I learnt a lot about a matter that is talked about but we never really get a chance to learn about it.
The first speaker was a lady named Carla and she showed us what The Simon Community do and the ways they help. To learn about that was very interesting. We learnt about the Soup Run they have been doing every single day since 1969 and the classes they provide to the homeless which is a sort of social group so the homeless can take their mind off their circumstances. To hear that gave you a different perspective on homelessness.
Next we got a talk from a worker named Glen and he gave his own story about how he faced homelessness and how The Simon Community helped him get where he is today. His story, I think, gave the talk a whole new perspective and kept it interesting because he could relate to what the people they help out have been through. All in all we learned about The Simon Community and we felt almost obliged to take part in the charity fun run they have in the Phoenix Park. Everyone after the talk wanted to take part and help out and
that was the outcome they hoped for. I fell sort of inspired by the talk and I'm happy I got a chance to learn more about such a good charity.
