To help achieve the September Cycle Challenge Mr Ferguson arranged a bike maintenance class. Here's what we learned:
As part of the Transition Year September Cycle Challenge, on Thursday the 12th of September Mr. Ferguson introduced Mark, a bicycle mechanic, from “Mike’s Bikes”, Dun Laoghaire. Mark gave us a rather insightful lesson on bike maintenance. He showed us many things including how to oil a chain correctly and more importantly how to fix a flat tyre. He kindly brought in one of his bikes from the shop and used it to demonstrate the crucial procedures in order to change a tyre and the likes. As well as this he taught us the importance of wearing a helmet. Being an avid cyclist he told us of his most recent crash that left him in hospital overnight with broken ribs and three metal plates in his head. While he was mountain biking up at Three Rock he came off the bike over a jump, smashing his face into the ground and breaking a few ribs in the process. I think that having heard a story such as his it has encouraged me and I hope many others to wear helmets whilst cycling. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed his visit and would like to thank Mark for coming to CBC. Also, I would like to remind all those in Transition Year that the Big Cycle day out takes place on Saturday September 28th. This is open to all TY pupils who have cycled to school during September and registered daily with Mr. Ferguson. Parents are also welcome to join in on the day ! More details will be posted on the TY Blog soon. Text: K.S. |
